Overview

Lellang is a slow titik distinguished by Bajau singing or kalangan, a form of sung verse. The melody may be sung, chanted or lulled in a style described as lolay.

Ritual and performance context

The interview connects Lellang with communities that practise maghandak (a possession ritual), as well as practices named magkalangan and magsaitan. During this performance, the tambul ropes may be loosened so the drum produces a lower bass-like sound rather than a sharp tone.

It may be danced by women or men. Among practitioners, movement may begin spontaneously when the rhythm and singing are heard. Other accounts in the interview also associate Lellang with women’s movement, welcoming dignitaries, and—depending on the kulintangan player—kuntau or silat. These uses require further community clarification.

The precise occasions, fuller origin history, associated stories and rhythm notation remain to be documented.
